Selecting a Photographer

Top 5 reasons to use a Professional Photographer (and not your Uncle Larry):

5.   I honestly don’t look like a model, so why take the chance of looking worse?

4.   I’m only getting married once (I hope) – let’s do it right for a change.

3.   I don’t know posing, f-stops, or proper lighting – nor could I care less, except that I want great photographs.

2.   The flowers will wilt, the food will be eaten and my dress will never be worn again, - yet the photographs will last forever.

1.  You get what you pay for.

The selection of your wedding photographer should be done carefully. Unfortunately, you don’t see what you’ve bought until after the wedding day. Many people, after seeing how much they are spending on the reception, flowers and music, will be tempted to “shop for bargains” when it comes time to select a photographer. Remember, the photographs and your album will be the one thing that you’ll have forever, and will rekindle your memories of that special day, many years after the wedding.

You should hire a photographer who is someone you trust to capture the feelings, mood, expressions, and moments of this most special of days. You must be comfortable with their personality and style of shooting weddings, whether traditional (with formal poses and staged candids), or the more contemporary photo-journalistic approach. Remember, when you view your album, you will be seeing your wedding through their eyes. Regardless of how much you spend (or save), if you’re not happy with the results, it was not worth it.

A good photographer, no matter if working from a large studio, or from a small business, should be able to put you at ease and capture the emotions and excitement of your wedding in such a way as to not interfere with the wedding itself, or your enjoyment of it.

A photographer should be able to use creativity in such a way to make your wedding stand out, no matter what style he or she uses.

Look for photographers who belong to professional organizations, as the members of these groups have dedicated themselves to become the best image-makers, ones that can create artistic portraits and have an extensive knowledge of lighting, composition, exposure and posing.

Other Things to Consider

The world is full of “wedding albums”.  Wedding albums are not 3-ring binders with magnetic pages or post bound scrap books.  Nor are they “pocket style” albums from camera stores.  The pages in these can eventually damage your prints and will not protect your treasured photographs like a professional album will.  Professional photographers can obtain the highest quality bridal albums and parent albums for you to choose from.  Even the best photographs will look unattractive in an inferior album, which will detract from their overall beauty and lasting quality.
