High School Senior Portraits

For the latest happenings, check out the Blog O' Luke

Mom and Dad, Senior Portraits have really changed since we were in high school!  No longer do they choose one idea, pose or background so that they all look alike.  The overwhelming majority of seniors today DON'T choose to do traditional ideas like the cap and gown, tuxedo, or a fur/felt wrap with pearls. But that doesn't mean they can't.

While many of today’s Seniors like the look of more modern portraits, many parents still want a traditional style of Senior Portraits.  As you review the images from the session, remember that each Senior will likely choose the images that reflect their own style.  These may not be your first choice.  This is why we have so many different ideas to choose from, so that everyone will have images that they like.

Things to think about before having your Senior Portrait created:

When should my senior portrait be taken?
Because of yearbook deadlines, it is best to take seniors portraits in June and July.  While portraits can be taken in August or September, it is a very busy time for studio business.  In addition, being so close to the high school’s deadlines, should your Senior not like the images from their session (bad hair day, poor clothing selection, etc.), there may not be enough time for a re-shoot.

Casual or formal clothes?
In group portraits, solid colors harmonize better than plaids, stripes, or bold prints.
Cool colors (blue, green, grey, and black) tend to recede, letting your face dominate the frame.
Warm colors (red, orange) come forward and compete with faces for attention.  Styles of dress, just like senior portraits, are always changing.  We have no control over what is worn in your senior's session. We can only make suggestions, so if there are questions about your senior's style of dress, discuss that with them before their session.

Many seniors choose to be photographed with personal props, which can range from sporting equipment to musical instruments, from a favorite stuffed animal to a car.  If your senior wants to include a personal prop, it’s a great way to show off their personality in the images.

Painted backdrop or a natural background?
I can come to your house and set up a mini-studio with a painted backdrop,
or we can use the inside or outside of your home, or another outdoor location as the background.
What better way to show you or your family's personality?

Film or Digital?
The portrait studio has gone completely digital.  Shooting digitally means you get more of a variety to choose from at a lower cost , and at a quicker turnaround.  Using digital images, I can add special effects, and create composites and calendars that would otherwise be difficult with film.

Shooting digitally also means that retouching can be performed much more cost effectively before printing.  Please understand that “digital” does not “magic”.  Special care still has to be taken while creating the portraits, and retouching can still get rather costly.  But much more extensive effects can be achieved in the same amount of time.  Click here to see what is possible with retouching.

Can digital prints really look as good as prints from film?
You may not think so.  This is probably as a result of you trying to print your digital images on your inkjet printer.  The images from your Senior Portrait session are captured with a professional digital camera, and will be printed by a professional photo lab using the latest digital equipment on the same professional paper that film is printed on.  I have several wall portraits on my walls; some are film prints, some are digital prints, and some are digital prints from scanned negatives.  You will be hard-pressed to ever see the difference in the prints.

How long does it take to see the images from my session?
Immediately after the photo session, you will schedule a sales session, which typically will be within a week's time.  When you return for the sales session, you will get the opportunity to review the images and place your order.  Because your order will be placed during this session, it is important that all decision-makers be at the sales session.  It never works when Mom leaves without placing the order, because "I have to talk it over with my husband".  There is no way anyone can make a purchase decision without having seen the images.

What size photographs should I order?
It all depends on how you decide to display the photographs.  Wall-sized portraits should be able to be viewed from across the room, and generally should be no smaller than 16x20.  Table-top portraits should be at least 8x10 in size.

Why should you get a surface finish on your portraits?
Surface finish coats protect the print, allowing you to remove the glass
from the framed portraits, thereby reducing excessive weight and removing glare altogether.
Spray and brush textures add dimension and luxury to your portraits.

Color or Black-and-White?
All the images from the session will be captured in color.  However, any of the images can be printed as black-and-white or as sepia-toned, which consists of brownish tones, which give the photo a warmer feel.  Color portraits are preferred more often, but black-and-white portraiture has a timeless quality and tends to be much more artistic.
